Centennial Civil Rights UNSUNG HERO
The Class Of 1958 congratulates Mr. Nathaniel  (Nate) Howard,  WHS Class of 1970, as our selective choice for CENTENNIAL CIVIL RIGHTS UNSUNG HERO.  During his early years at Southern University, Baton Rouge, LA  in 1972, Nate Howard from the Webster High School Sports Team, was a member of  a Southern University campus group "STUDENTS UNITED".  As a member of this group he was involved in numerous protests for students' rights on campus.  After a meeting at one of the member's house, they were pulled over by the cops and ended up with two members being killed by the cops and arrests of others.  Nate Howard was arrested.  The group, STUDENTS UNITED,  was expelled from Southern University and banned for life from the campus.  The cops were never  prosecuted for the killings.  50 years later, in 2022, Louisiana Governor,  John Bel Edwards, issued an apology AMENDE AWARD to the families of the dead members and individuals still alive from the group.  For more detailed information from news accounts, click/touch the info buttons below.
